Oberlin College seeks a creative and innovative leader to help manage Career Services’ mission of assisting students in their transitions from Oberlin.  Serving the needs of students in the College of Arts and Sciences and Conservatory of Music, the focus of this position is on strengthening the career counseling and career exploration programs of the Office.

The Office of Career Services provides individualized advising to over 1,000 students a year focusing on career exploration and decision-making, experiential and entry-level opportunities, networking, and the graduate and professional school application process.  For more information about the Office of Career Services, please see www.oberlin.edu/career.

Responsibilities: 

Essential Job Functions:
Program Management: Lead the staff of the Office of Career Services (OCS) in the design, delivery and evaluation of career development programs that help students, over a four-year period, clarify their interests, values and skills, and engage in the career exploration process.
-    Oversee the Oberlin Connect program, the Alumni Networking Initiative, and various college wide and department specific alumni panels, class presentations and skill building workshops.
-    Develop collaborative and effective relationships with the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs and the Alumni Association to build a network of alumni that will be used to support the Entrepreneurship program, the Law Scholars program, and the Oberlin Connect program, as well as a general network of alumni career advisors to serve as mentors and as participants on panels and in workshops.
-    Conduct regular surveys and focus groups to assess the needs and satisfaction levels of students, faculty and employers related to career services programs.

Counseling Services Management: In partnership with the Director, engage in strategic planning, leadership, and oversight of OCS career counseling services.
-    Develop a counseling model for the office and assess/evaluate the needs of students and service provided by OCS counselors.
-    Provide direct service with an emphasis on individual and group career counseling, job search coaching and graduate school advising to students and young alumni
-    Research and compile educational information from journals, publications, and government reports/studies to strengthen the professional theoretical foundation and knowledge of the counseling staff.
-    Manage the career resource library and serve as a resource of information on industry and new career trends.
-    Hire, train, supervise and evaluate the office’s Peer Career Advisors.

Pre-Law Advising: Serve as the primary coordinator of pre-law advising for Oberlin College. This position will also serve as the office contact for the Oberlin Law Scholars Program, a unique, selective, year-long program designed to build scholarship and experience for students interested in law.  Pre-law advising would include:
-    In collaboration with members of the faculty, assist students and alumni with law school selection and provide assistance with the law school application process.
-    Coordinate law school visits and promote those visits to the student body.
-    Advise students and alumni considering careers in law.
-    Collect law school placement statistics and disseminate the data to appropriate offices on campus.

Supervision & Leadership: Supervise the general operations and the day-to-day responsibilities for an administrative assistant. Monitor distribution of work assignments, assure communication among staff members is proactive and consistent, and manage work sequences to support the Office’s mission.
-    Participate in staff and team meetings.
-    Advise and assist in the creation and organization of planning and committee work, lead discussions for appropriate segments, and develop outlines of work sequences for implementation.

Technology: Evaluate and develop a working knowledge of the technology needed or in use to manage various programming sponsored by the Office. This would include alumni network management, shadow matching, library and Web resource management, and tracking student and alumni services.

Constituent Relationships and Networks: Design, implement, and assess an integrated outreach effort that targets alumni and increases the number of networking and informational resources available to students. Work with staff and students to identify, cultivate, and track strategic relationships with alumni.
-    Serve as a liaison to a segment of academic departments of the College of Arts and Sciences, providing information about the pursuits of graduates in their disciplines, workplace and market changes, and planned initiatives of the Office of Career Services.
-    Develop a strong professional network with staff members from peer institutions; Share best practices and programming initiatives. 

Professional Involvement: Represent the Office of Career Services in local and national professional associations by serving on committees and presenting at conferences, staying current with industry standards to be able to contribute to the knowledge of the profession.

Marginal Job Functions: Undertake special projects and duties as directed.

Requirements: A Master’s degree in Counseling, Student Personnel Administration or equivalent is required along with two to five years of relevant management, preferably in a college environment. Additional experience in data gathering, data analysis, assessment and reporting preferred.  Sound judgment, team management, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills required.  Ability to create and build on constituent relationships, particularly with students, employers, faculty and alumni, and the ability to speak persuasively to small and large groups. This position requires the ability to work extended hours on a regular basis throughout the year. Occasional travel is required.

Compensation: Within the range established for this position, salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, and includes an excellent benefits package.

DUTIES: Responsible for the leadership and overall management of all services and activities related to the Center for Career Management.  Oversight and development of programs, policies and procedures to provide effective services for students. Develop and maintain liaisons with other University departments as related to needs and services in career planning and development of initiatives. Conduct outreach and education to the campus community. Conduct and analyze internal and external assessment.


QUALIFICATIONS:  Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel, Human Resource Management, Business or related field required. Six to eight years progressive leadership and supervisory responsibilities required, preferably in a higher education or comparable setting.  Administrative experience including supervision of professional staff, budgeting, and strategic planning required. Strong interpersonal skills and experience working with students of diverse educational, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds preferred.
